April Founders Note
Thank you for being here and seeing my vision for The Village Schoolhouse.
I just wanted to take a moment to personally say thank you. Thank you for being here, for seeing the heart behind this schoolhouse, and for being willing to step into something different for your children. That means more than I can put into words. The schoolhouse is a complete and utter joy to create truly and I cannot wait to see the lives changed here, including my own. I had a beautiful schooling experince growing up, but nothing like this. Nothing that prepared me for real life and so I am excited to learn alongside my children and fall back in love and awe of the wonders of this world.
We’ve had such an incredible response already, and there are so many families interested in joining us. It’s been an honor to see so many of you join our waitlist for our founding year. Thank you for your patience and kindness as we navigate alll the ins and outs of starting a school from the ground up. The Zoom interviews we have had have been so special, the community that we are building is exactly what I dreamed of and I am so thankful.
The Village Schoolhouse is not meant to mirror a hybrid, private, or public school model.
This is about changing how we school our children. It’s about walking away from the pressure of standards built around testing and workforce preparation, and instead asking… what actually matters?
What kind of humans are we raising? How do they think, communicate, lead, create, problem-solve, and move through the real world?
Here, we get to set a different standard for our children and rewire our own brains to what education needs to be.
This is education built in real life. In curiosity. In leadership. In conversation. In nature and wonder. In learning how to think instead of what to think.
Our curriculum will continue to evolve every single year. As our community grows, it will grow with it—adding, refining, becoming better. The goal here is not profitability. It’s impact. It’s building something that truly changes education for families who are looking for another way.
So if you feel that pull in your heart toward this. Please reach out and step into a different way of educating with us.
A personal note on tuition
For those praying about joining us but budget is the reason you feel like you can’t join us, please don’t quietly step away.
If you feel called to be here, let’s have a conversation.
This space is being built with intention, and our heart is to bring together the right families. If finances feel tight or uncertain this year, as they do for so many of us, reach out. We are more than willing to talk one-on-one and explore ways to help make this work for your family.
We believe there is a way when it’s meant to be.
Just reply to this email or message us directly. I’m here, and I would love to connect.
With so much gratitude,
Kayla Medellin, Founder
WHAT DOES OUR WORK AT HOME LOOK LIKE?
One of the biggest questions I get is what does our role look like at home then? So I wanted to send out some ideas. What you decide to do outside of the schoolhouse curriculum is individual and up to each family but I will share what we will be doing for our kiddo.
For our littles (around 4–5), home is slow and foundational. About 20 minutes a day of a reading curriculum, along with a simple, consistent math curriculum. That’s it. No overwhelm. Just building the basics while protecting their love for learning.
For our bigs (around 9/10+), home is where core academics are strengthened. Math and reading rich literature are the focus. Writing will naturally flow from what they’re reading and engaging with.Have them discuss the books they are reading with you and write papers on it. We are happy to help you with any questions of ideas you have.
And then the rest… is covered here.
At the schoolhouse, we take those foundations and bring them to life through hands-on projects, real conversations, leadership opportunities, nature, collaboration, and real-world application. This is where it all connects and becomes meaningful.
This is a partnership. You’re not doing school at home and then sending them to more school. You’re laying the foundation, and we’re building on it in a completely different way.
FRIDAY CLUBS
We’re also so excited about our Friday Clubs, which are open to both our schoolhouse families and the broader homeschool community.
These are designed to give kids even more opportunities to explore interests, try new things, and build skills in a fun and engaging environment. Think art, science, hands-on projects, and skill-based classes that continue to spark curiosity and creativity.
Clubs are also a beautiful entry point into our community if you’re not quite ready to jump fully into the schoolhouse.
