Building The Foundation
The Village Schoolhouse Magnolia is a homeschool program for families in Old Magnolia, TX. We meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, offering a multi-age learning environment where children explore subjects through hands-on projects, nature play, and real-life discovery.
Our model is designed to support homeschool families by lightening the weekly load while keeping parents fully in charge of their child’s education. Through our Curriculum of Life™ approach, students engage in rich literature, meaningful discussion, Spanish immersion, collaborative projects, and practical life skill development — all within a close-knit, relationship-centered community.
As students grow, their learning evolves. Our Bigs program shifts toward real-world skills and responsibility, where students spend time developing leadership, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, and practical skills such as gardening, animal stewardship, and project-based problem solving. Community mentors and local leaders also join us throughout the year to share their experience and pour into the next generation.
In addition to our core Schoolhouse days, we also offer Friday enrichment clubs, including Art Club and Science Club, where students can dive deeper into creative and scientific exploration through hands-on projects. These clubs are open to both Schoolhouse families and families who would like to experience our learning environment.
At The Village Schoolhouse, we focus not only on academics, but on cultivating character, confidence, curiosity, and wonder — qualities that will carry children far beyond the classroom.
The Littles (ages 4+) meet from 9 am–12 pm, building foundational skills through play, nature exploration, rich stories, creative projects, and hands-on discovery. Their days are filled with movement, imagination, and collaborative learning designed to nurture curiosity and a love of learning.
The Bigs (ages 10+) meet from 1–4 pm, where learning shifts toward deeper thinking, leadership, and real-world application. Students collaborate, debate ideas, develop practical skills, and work on meaningful projects connected to entrepreneurship, stewardship of the land, and problem solving in the world around them.
Learning Structure
For the Littles, each semester unfolds through cyclical thematic units that integrate literature, nature exploration, creative projects, and collaborative learning.
For the Bigs, the focus shifts toward skill-building, discussion, and real-world projects — from gardening and animal stewardship to entrepreneurship, public speaking, and leadership development.
Throughout the semester, students work on both individual projects and collaborative group efforts. At the end of each semester, families gather for student exhibitions, where children proudly share the work, ideas, and skills they have developed.

Hands-On Learning
Subjects are explored through thematic units, projects, rich literature, and student-led collaboration that encourages curiosity and meaningful discovery.
Nature & Play
Outdoor learning is woven into each day through our outdoor classroom, mud kitchen, nature walks, observation, and exploration in the natural world.
Survival Skills & Outdoor Confidence
Throughout the year, students learn practical outdoor skills. These experiences build confidence, resilience, and respect for the world around them.
Spanish Immersion
Full immersion learning through songs, games, storytelling, and conversation.
The Bigs: Homesteading & Leadership Program
As students grow, their learning shifts toward real-world responsibility and skill development.
Our Bigs program introduces students to homesteading and practical life skills such as gardening, caring for chickens, understanding soil health, observing ecosystems, and learning the foundations of sustainable living. Students may also explore skills like beekeeping, food production, and stewardship of the land.
Leadership and communication are also central to this stage. Students practice discussion, debate, public speaking, and collaborative problem solving while developing confidence in expressing their ideas.
Entrepreneurship is woven into the experience as well. Through projects and mentorship from local business owners and community leaders, students begin exploring how ideas turn into meaningful work.
Student Market Projects
The final two weeks of each semester are dedicated to preparing for our Student Market, where students present, share, and sometimes sell what they have created with their families and the community.
Parent Onsite Lounge
Parents are welcome to remain onsite during Schoolhouse days and work from our dedicated parent lounge.
One-on-One Family Meetings
Before joining The Village Schoolhouse, families participate in a pre-registration meeting so we can get to know one another and ensure the program is a good fit. Throughout the year, we also meet with families to discuss each child’s growth — physically, socially, emotionally, spiritually, and academically.

Kayla Medellin
Founder, Wife and motherKayla is a mother, entrepreneur, and visionary behind The Village Schoolhouse. Her heart for this school was born out of her own journey as a mom — longing for an environment where children are known deeply, challenged thoughtfully, and nurtured as whole people.
She believes education should cultivate curiosity, character, leadership, and a love of learning — not just check academic boxes.
The Village Schoolhouse was created to give families freedom, community, and an individualized approach that honors how each child is uniquely wired.
For Kayla, this isn’t just a school — it’s part of building the village we all need and creating what she couldn’t find for her own children and bringing this type of schooling to families all over the world.
Mrs. Smith
The Schoolhouse Teacher, wife, motherOur Founding Lead Educator is a wife, a mother of three, holds multiple teaching recognitions and brings over a decade of experience in education.
She began her career as a curriculum writer for the STEAM department at a nationally recognized children’s museum, developing hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences designed to spark curiosity and wonder.
Her work has always centered on one core belief: education should shape not only what children know, but who they become. She is passionate about immersive, relational learning — where rich literature, thoughtful discussion, nature, craftsmanship, and real-world application work together to cultivate confident, capable, and deeply curious children.
At The Village Schoolhouse, she is helping build something intentional and lasting — a learning environment where children are known, challenged, and nurtured in both character and intellect.
